Here's another experiment I made with a bunch of different hardwood species scraps I have collected. It's amazing how they accumulate so quickly while you work on other projects. These coasters have maple, rosewood, Purple Heart, walnut, Paduk, cherry and white oak in them. I made a large block by gluing random pieces together and planing it down to ensure that it became a large square. I then sliced 1cm thick pieces on my chop saw to make a few sets. Sanding took awhile and required a little rigging to get my palm sander to stay stationary while I sanded the the surfaces and edgest to make them smooth. I finished them with an outdoor grade varathane - 2 coats. The stands are maple with 1/4" dowel scraps. I'm really loving the opportunity to build random projects with scrap pieces left over from other projects. Thanks for checking out my work!
